The important thing is to inculcate good values and virtues in our students and this will provide them with the basic necessary tools to tackle any problems or to be successful.

Teaching Experience: 20 years in teaching and 20 years in leadership

As we move into the new Academic Year 2017/2018, I would like to warmly welcome all stakeholders: teachers, parents and students to another exciting year of meaningful and authentic learning. I hope that all of you had a good break, are well-rested and are now energised and ready to forge ahead and embrace the upcoming challenges.

Our 5 Strategic Thrusts of Quality Teaching and Learning: Quality Staff, Quality Students, Quality Resource Management and Quality Parental/Community Partnership will continue to guide us. Besides the numerous programmes which are running smoothly, I would like to focus on Student Leadership Development for this academic year.

Leadership development is a very important component of character building and is instrumental to the success of the students. Students will be empowered to make decisions and take charge of their learning. They will be more disciplined, independent and able to think on their feet, reflect and discover their potential and creativity. It will also help them to achieve higher academic excellence and challenge them to reach the acme, the peak of their achievements. Students, knowing that they are leaders, will also mentally make it a point to behave well and be a good role model to others. We aim to inculcate such excellent attributes of leadership so that these values will put our students in good stead when they hold high-ranking positions in the organisations that they work in.

We are therefore introducing this leadership platform for all our students. The leadership roles need not be something different, great or hard to do. As a start, it could be a small regular task of ensuring that the white board is cleaned or that lights are switched off at the end of the day, helping the teachers to collect or give out books, taking attendance or more structured roles like prefects, House Captains or monitors. This will help to instill in the students that paying attention and focusing on what he/she is doing and doing it right is an essential element leading to greater success. A small task that is well accomplished will give the students a small sense of pride. They will be motivated to do another and another and, by then, would have completed numerous tasks. If you can’t do a small task well, it will be difficult for you to do big things.

Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, made this remark: “If you want to change the world, make your bed every morning” - a reference that it was a small task but an important one which would lead you to greater things in life. (For more info, you can watch his address in YouTube).

Leadership can also be extended to parents. I would like to invite parents to be our Class Representatives (a leadership role) and to join the Parents Support Team (PST). This is a good opportunity for you to develop your leadership skills and to lead. The PST has always been supporting the school and students in numerous ways and SISB greatly appreciates your contributions which have helped to elevate SISB to a higher plane.

Therefore, to the PST and all parents, please keep the SISB flag flying high for the benefit of our students, your children. You are the vital link, that is the catalyst for students’ learning. It is only through this strong partnership and bonding that we are able to excel and to prepare our students for the next century. We do not know what the future holds although we are able to anticipate to a certain extent. The important thing is to inculcate good values and virtues in our students/children and this will provide them with the basic necessary tools to tackle any problems or to be successful.

My staff (both teaching and non-teaching) and I are committed and dedicated to developing and maximising the potential of the students in the “Spirit of Excellence”. Our students are unique and we endeavour to provide opportunities to help them develop their area of uniqueness be it in academic, arts, leadership, social or emotional domains. As consummate professionals, we are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that all students are offered the opportunity to fulfil their potential both in and beyond the classroom. We would like to motivate and inspire the parents, staff and students to “Dare to Reach the Highest”, our new school motto.

Let’s all look forward to another successful year in SISB and I am confident that we (SISB, Parents and Students) can all reach our desired goals if we collaborate and support one another.

Together We Soar And Achieve!
